Third Glorious Mystery: The Descent of the Holy Spirit

Fruits of the Mystery: Holy Wisdom to know the truth and share with everyone, Divine Charity, Worship of the Holy Spirit

Ten days after the ascension of the Lord to Heaven, his friends and disciples are gathered, forlorn, in an upper room in Jerusalem. The Holy Spirit descends upon them, filling them with inspiration and zeal to spread the Good News of the Lord's death and resurrection throughout the whole world.

Acts 2:2-4 Suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of a violent wind which filled the entire house in which they were sitting; and there appeared to them tongues as of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak different languages as the Spirit gave them power to express themselves.

Come down O love divine

Come down, O Love divine,
Seek thou this soul of mine,
And visit it with thine own ardour glowing;
O Comforter, draw near,
Within my heart appear,
And kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn,
Till earthly passions turn
To dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
And let thy glorious light
Shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

Let holy charity
My outward vesture be,
And lowliness become mine inner clothing:
True lowliness of heart,
Which takes the humbler part,
And o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

And so the yearning strong,
With which the soul will long,
Shall far outpass the power of human telling;
For none can guess its grace,
Till he become the place
Wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

The Window

Below the castles of Heaven, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove with wings outstretched, shines radiant beams on the heads of two of the disciples and of Mary, mother of Jesus. Their heads are also adorned with tongues of flame, and other such tongues fill the room, descending on the heads of each of those present. Mary sits serenely, her arms crossed. Behind her stands Peter, in golden garments, closest friend of Jesus and leader of the group, now apostles, who will spread the word of God amongst all the peoples of Earth. Beside him is John, the beloved disciple, to whom Jesus on the cross had entrusted the care of his mother.

The scroll in the bottom light reads Repleti sunt omnes spiritu sancto (they were filled with the Holy Spirit).

The inscription at the foot of the window reads: Pray for the good estate of Thomas Cotgreave the donor of this window
