The idea for a Banner Group was first suggested shortly before the arrival of the pandemic and it finally came into being as part of the Parish Renewal programme. As well as producing new banners we are responsible for the care and storage of the Parish’s existing banners.
New members are always very welcome, no previous experience is necessary.
Please email werburgh465@btinternet.com if you are interested. We will be happy to answer any questions and let you know more about what we do.
We have renovated the four ‘We Celebrate’ sacramental banners, which had been on regular display in the church but were beginning to show their age. In addition, the old St Werburgh’s banner has been cleaned and mended and the Sweet Sacrament banner repaired. The St Werburgh banner was displayed on the altar for St Werburgh’s Feast Day and will hopefully be on permanent display in the near future along with the Sweet Sacrament banner.
There are currently four members of the group – Stella, Vera, Bernie and Kate. Most of our work is done individually at home and we meet as necessary to plan projects and share techniques.
All four members of the group worked on an Easter banner, each producing a section – Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. These were then sewn together to form a cross.
The group’s next project is to produce banners to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the parish.
Our reasons for joining the group included learning new things, sharing and improving our skills and getting to know more people. Our level of experience ranges from complete beginner to very experienced.
As one member of the group put it:
“I have joined the banner group to improve my sewing skills and to learn new skills like embroidery. I enjoy designing and it has given me a big confidence boost to have made my first banner and to see it up in church. My previous experience was making two sets of curtains and a quilt and through the group I am becoming more ambitious with projects for church and at home. I am excited to work with the other members on a shared project where we all contribute to producing future banners.”
