Parish Newsletter

Applications are coming in, so spread the word far and wide, everyone! Six hours a week, over two or three days. £14 per hour. Main Job responsibilities: responding to emails, telephone calls, letters and callers at the door; monitoring the Parish Priest’s Diary and booking appointments where appropriate; preparing the Newsletter; dealing with contractors; taking Minutes for Parish Council. You’ll need to have good admin skills, be a team player, know your way around a computer (mainly Word), and provide references. Full details on the Parish Website, including how to apply. Aim: to keep all the excellent renewal programmes going and add to them whenever necessary. The Parish Council is also the Parish Priest’s Cabinet, the group of trusted parishioners who can debate each and every issue we face together, always present an honest opinion and never tell the PP what they think he wants to hear. So, the Renewal Steering Group have come up with the following model:

• Social: Pat Floate and Bernice Meredith alternating
• Outreach: Lal Cook

 

These portfolio leads have emerged clearly over the last eighteen months. We’ll be looking to one or more of our three elected members to see if they’d be interested in joining any of these six areas and generally challenging us with their new ideas and fresh vision.  So, get thinking, everyone! These six are already on the PC, so can you think of one, two or three parishioners you’d like to vote for to become one of our three “elected members”? No need to ask them: just give us their names, and we will approach the ones who get most votes.

• Thursday 23rd May, 7.00 pm: Open Meeting for all Parishioners, to give us their reactions and ask any questions they may have.
• Tuesday 28th May: On-line voting opens for our three new members.
• Sunday 2nd June and Sunday 9th June: Paper Voting.
• Week beginning 10th June: approaching those who have gained the most votes to see if they’d be willing to join the Parish Council.
• Sunday 23rd June: Results announced.
• Wednesday 10th July, 7.00 pm: First Meeting of the new-look Parish Council and Social.

Trena Cox is the extraordinary artist responsible for the magnificent stained-glass windows in the porch, and in many other local churches. Not enough is known about her life (1895-1980). The Wikipedia article is a good place to start, listing most of her known windows. Our own Aleta Doran, Artist-in-Residence at Chester Cathedral 2019-24, has done a great deal of research on Cox, and there is to be an exhibition of her work in the Cathedral this autumn, and then at the Grosvenor Museum. Aleta is coming here to St Werburgh’s to give us an illustrated talk on Cox on Wednesday 26th June at 2.00 pm, an occasion not to be missed. This is part of Chester History Festival this year, and we hope to have our own church open for wizziters for most of that week, Sunday 23rd June to Friday 28th June. Our super History Group, led by Ann Marie and John Curtis, are organising a rota of wolunteers to be on duty here that week, and may well be asking others to help out.

8th November 2024. An information meeting will be held on Thursday 23rd May, at 7.00 pm in St. Columba’s. If you wish to be Confirmed next November please email stcolumbatheresaconfirmation@hotmail.co.uk to register, before the meeting, stating your school year, or if you are over 18 and wish to join the adult preparation group. If you are not sure about being Confirmed, then please come along to the meeting anyway to find out more.

This afternoon, 5.00 pm: do come and join us for a city-wide Churches Together celebration. 

Give us your views on Renewal, Parish Council, you name it, and ask your questions. Everyone welcome. 

Great first week, with many sales: do have a look today you see if there’s anything there you personally would like. We aim to find good homes for it all. 

We celebrate our diverse Parish on the Feast of Pentecost by asking children with two languages to take part in the  prayers of Intercession. All children at the Mass will take part with the offertory procession, singing or playing instruments. 6.00 pm, Pentecost Sunday, May 19th. Please do come along and support the church of tomorrow.
