Total of 42 candidates enrolled for Confirmation – well done, everyone! Not too late to join: just send your name and details in. Now we are working on the Programme, all ready for the first Class on Tuesday 10th September, here in church at 7.00 pm.
We now have the Diary for next year’s Mass Intentions. Always a joy and a privilege to say Mass for you, so do please get those special dates in as soon as possible. We operate a strict ‘first come, first served policy’!
We hope you all took the green A4 flyer last weekend, telling you of progress to date. The items on which we are now moving forward are the new Altar Cloths (the free-standing Altar Candles mean there is no chance these new cloths will be ruined by wax spills and drips, as the old ones were); re-binding of the three Lectionaries; re-upholstering of the Dining Room Chairs; purchase of a Defibrillator for church; refurbishment of the sacristy and altar bells; sourcing of antique hand-rails for the front door of the Parish House; and mending of kneelers and benches in church and table in Dining Room. How can you help? Three requests today, please: do you know of a good local upholsterer (thanks for one offer already received!); ditto for a local joiner for benches, kneelers and table; thirdly, anyone willing to go to Beeston Antique Reclamation to ask about handrails?
Today, Saturday 20th July Ruth Tierney and her daughters, Clare and Madeleine, are taking part in a 26-mile hike in the Lake District organised by the Alzheimer's Society. They are doing the hike in memory of Ruth's mother, Gill. Huge thanks to those who have already sponsored her or made donations. What a fantastic charity for us all to support in this way! Good luck, Ruth!
And then when I say something serious you are all rolling in the aisles! I was deadly serious two weeks ago: the train ride from Crewe to Chester on a sunny Summer evening is as lovely as any you will see in England. And while on this subject, have you yet taken the new Halton Curve train ride to Liverpool? It’s fantastic, a much more scenic route than Merseyrail’s stopping at every lamppost between here and Birkenhead, and a view of the Liverpool skyline from the south to die for. Eat your heart out, Michael Palin. Same price and journey-time as Merseyrail, but the tickets are not interchangeable.
Do please take your copy today, detailing progress on the Our Mission Together appeal as a whole. It raised £10.6m!!
Now that the building work has been completed, does anyone have a power-washing kit that could be used for the front of church and the pavement outside? There’s still a lot of dust and dirt there, which is being brought into our tarmac driveway every time cars drive over it. Anyone able to help?
For the SVP Holiday Home, allowing families to have a holiday who otherwise would be unable to do so, and providing others with family days out during the long summer break.
The ‘Ad Clerum’ is the official Bishop’s notification to all the clergy of the diocese, issue every couple of months, and last week’s contained the summer moves. (Sorry, folks – I’m still not featuring!! Be brave – one year I will…) Five of our Diocesan Priests are retiring this summer: Frs John McManus (West Kirby), John Rafferty (Altrincham), John Gordon (Cheadle), Paul Lomas (Heald Green) and John Pascoe (Shifnal & Albrighton). We send them all our very best wishes for a long and happy retirement – and many thanks, everyone, for your support of the Diocesan Appeal, a major part which was for the care of Retired Priests and the training of Seminarians. At the other end, the excellent news in that FIVE young men have come through the Cathedral House of Discernment and are starting training for the Priesthood this autumn: two to Oscott, two to the Beda, and one to a Pastoral Year at Our Lady’s, Ellesmere Port. Good luck, one and all – our prayers go with you!
Two Masses that day: 8.30 am and 12.15 pm.
Friday 26th July at 7.30, “The Sounds of Stage and Screen – A Light-hearted Evening of Well-Known Music”. Tickets £10, inc refreshments, from FP at all Masses today.
