St Werburgh's Roman Catholic Parish, Chester

A. F. Hughes

Lt

Died: May 1917

The death of Lt Hughes is mentioned in the May 1917 edition of St Werburgh's Parish Magazine. No other details were given. His name is not on the Town Hall Memorial and was not on the original memorial at St Werburgh's.

It is possible that he was the Frank Hughes previously referred to as organising musical evenings at the Young Catholic Mens' Club of St Werburgh's Parish.

He could also be the F. A. Hughes who sang from the lectern with Arthur Brandreth at the High Mass on St Werburgh's Feastday in February 1910.

There was also a Mr Hughes who was choirmaster at St Werburgh's in 1916.

Exhaustive searches of the registers of both St Werburgh's and St Francis' Churches and examination of Chester census material has revealed no-one of suitable age. Neither did searching available army records.

It is possible that Hughes did not live in Chester but still led St Werburgh's Choir.

It is also possible that Hughes was a relation of the choirmaster.
