St Werburgh's Roman Catholic Parish, Chester

Arranging a funeral

St Werburgh's is always pleased and privileged to celebrate Funerals for our parishioners, either here in Church or in the Chapel at Blacon. A service in church could either be a Requiem Mass or a simpler Funeral Service. It is not necessary for the person concerned to have been a Catholic, especially where it is a family member of one of our parishioners who may not have had a church of his or her own. Your Funeral Director will make all the necessary arrangements to suit yourselves, the civic authorities (for the burial or cremation) and ourselves, but if you would like to contact us to discuss possibilities, please do not hesitate to do so, and we will do our very best to help out at this sad time.

November is the month of the year when we especially remember our dead family and friends. We have a special Holy Souls Book here in St Werburgh's, containing the names of anyone who has died and was precious to someone still alive who has asked their name to be included. One page of this Book is read aloud at every Mass during November, and at a special Mass of the Holy Souls at the end of the month, every name is read out, and people invited to come forward and light a candle in their memory if they would like to do so. In addition, we have a special Mass for the Recently Bereaved towards the start of the month, at which, once again, the names of all those whose funerals we have conducted, either here at St Werburgh's or elsewhere, are read out, and people invited to come forward and light a special candle for them. On Sunday afternoons during November, we also hold special Blessings of Graves in Blacon and Overleigh - full details of dates can be found either through the Newsletter or from the Parish Diary.
